I have not seen movies by Prakash Jha. Rajneeti was my first Prakash Jha movie. To start off, this movie is an intersection between Mahabharat and The Godfather. While the characters and part of the plot are totally based on Mahabharat, two particular characters are based on Sonny Corleone and Michael Corleone. Not a total lift, but clever inspirations. I would say adapting any part of Mahabharat in the contemporary mileu is difficult, just coz of the scale of the epic. But Jha does a good enough job with it. The movie could and should have been great but somewhere down the line I would say it ended up being just a GOOD movie. To me the ultimate adaptation of Mahabharat or a part of it was in THALAPATHI. That movie had infinite powerful scenes. This movie though after the first hour and a half, loses a bit of its steam. And if I were given a choice between Thalapathi and this one for repeated viewings, I would choose Thalapathi. All said and done, a Good movie which could have been awesome.
